Look Before You Jump Leap

Karen Salmansohn, One-Minute Career Therapist
August 27, 2007.

If you wake up every morning dreading work, it's understandable if you're thinking it's time for a career change. But before you make that leap, there are a number of things you'll want to consider to ensure you're ready.

First, figure out what's making you unhappy. Is it your job, your boss or your career? Make sure not to confuse the former and the latter. Also, make sure that your dislike for your position isn't a result of your lacking the skill set you need to take on bigger challenges. It might just be a matter of time before you can move on to better things within the company.

It's only your business what business you should be in. Never switch a career due to peer, spouse or parental pressure.

Be competitive only with yourself. Never switch careers out of envy of someone else's job. Remember: All that greener grass you see on the other side could turn to be Astroturf.

Never make a career change simply for the dollars. It's true: Money won't buy you happiness. The only thing that extra money might buy you is a bottle of anti-depressants and therapy when you discover how much you hate your new higher-paying, unfulfilling career.

Be ready to put in a lot of work to get the right work. Always take the necessary time to do the right research, gather good contacts, network, join organizations, understand your finances, learn the pros and cons of your new career goals, and sign up for any required education. A career change could take many, many months.

Interview yourself before you go for any job interviews. Be prepared to talk easily and glowingly about your greatest skills, values, interests, loves, and strengths.
